Tax Loss Is Not Abstract When Products Go Illegal
Every product pushed outside the legal channel becomes harder to inspect, harder to tax, and more expensive to police.

AGLC reported more than 225,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes seized in Alberta in the first half of 2026, with an estimated $13.5 million in provincial tax avoidance. Its public contraband page also links illegal tobacco to a multi-year rise in activity and a drop of more than $500 million in tobacco tax revenue over five years.
