A fresh tax-page signal

Alberta tobacco tax guidance showed an October 8 update and states that law enforcement officers must report contraband tobacco seizures to Tax and Revenue Administration under section 24.2 of the Tobacco Tax Act. Officers are asked to submit the report within 72 hours.

Why this matters for nicotine policy

AGLC reports a 2024-25 total of 240,584 contraband tobacco cartons seized with $14,435,040 in tax avoidance on its contraband information page. Any Bill 208 debate should ask whether restrictions help the legal tax base or hand more room to illegal sellers.

Tax justice ask

Publish seizure reporting, tax leakage estimates, and enforcement outcomes beside any proposed access restriction.
