A same-week enforcement signal
Medicine Hat News reported on October 2 that police seized about $92,600 in suspected contraband cigarettes and a 2024 Cadillac XT5 during a stolen-property investigation. Charges were pending, and police had not named anyone at the time of the report.
Why it belongs in Bill 208 debate
Alberta’s tobacco tax page says law enforcement officers must report all contraband tobacco seizures to Tax and Revenue Administration within 72 hours, under reporting requirements in effect since December 11, 2025, according to Alberta tobacco tax guidance. That means Alberta is already treating contraband as a measurable public-revenue problem.
The coalition request
Do not debate access rules without publishing tax leakage, seizure reports, and illegal-channel enforcement at the same time.
